LEARN REAL YOGA THERAPY: The Difference between a ‘WORK-OUT’’ and a ‘WORK-IN’ :
What matters most?
Feeling good or looking good?
When you are younger looking good is important, but as you get older feeling good is obviously much more important.
It's not easy to have useful purpose to the world, or to help others, unless you feel good physically, energetically and mentally.
PHYSICAL WELL-BEING: To feel good you need to be physically pain-free and functional. Your body will feel physically good and you will feel better if you have a balance between strength and flexibility using intelligent and natural posture, movement and breathing.
ENERGETIC WELL-BEING: You also need a balance between how good you can use your body (your anatomical health) and you how feel (your physiological health). Ideally you should feel good and have lots of energy and feel balanced and calm.
MENTAL WELL-BEING: It is also important to feel good mentally and emotionally in your daily life and also while you practice. To achieve this while you exercise you need to work in a way that allows you to access your unconscious mind and programme the messages of safety, trust and love, the information of the parasympathetic nervous that enables you to rejuvenate, heal, and grow on all levels. And also we need to de-programme the over-stimulation of the ‘flight or fight response’ (sympathetic nervous system) that is so dominating of the body in modern everyday life and in most people’s exercise systems, which turns off the body’s healing response as well as the ability to absorb nutrients and regenerate cells, and which sends messages through your mind and body of fear, anger, aggression, lack of safety and lack of trust (all of which are the opposite of yoga, and mental well-being).
It is important to differentiate between doing yoga (which can have therapy as a byproduct) and having a workout. Real yoga should not be stressful in any way but it can make you fitter and healthier physically, energetically and mentally. Yoga should feel like a ‘WORK-IN’ not a ‘WORK-OUT’.
Ideally you should feel better on all levels after your yoga practice. You should feel more grounded, more relaxed, but have more energy, less need go food or sleep, and less sense of stiffness after yoga.
For most normal adults the simplest and usually the best way to safely improve health and well-being on all levels is to reestablish the natural state. Re-learn how to move naturally, breathe naturally, adopt natural postures and try to think naturally. This is first thing I teach and for most people the most important thing to learn.
